Cone Camp is a 2-day, hands-on field training with an 2-3 hour online prerequisite course. Attendees learn how to identify, monitor, and collect seeds from California’s native conifers to support forest restoration.
Pre-Camp
To maximize hands-on experience at Cone Camp, all participants are required complete a self-paced 2–3 hour online course before attending. Learn the basics of conifer tree ID, cone development, cone surveying, cone monitoring, cone collection, along with key online tools like Survey123, CAL FIRE Assessment of Needs, and Avenza. Note: If you arrive to Cone Camp without having completed the online course, you will be far behind and it will be very difficult to fully participate.
Day 1
Review the basics and get your hands sappy with experience rating cone crops, submitting surveys, setting up throwlines, evaluating cone ripeness, and bagging & tagging cones.
Day 2
Put the pedal to the metal by practicing & conducting official cone surveys guided by cone experts and support surveys for the local forest. Stay for end-of-day group discussion, Q&A, and raffle prizes!
What you get
Organizers are committed to making Cone Camp affordable. The $25 fee ensures each camper space at the group campsite for up to 3 nights- the night before, during, and after camp) , guidance from industry experts, hands-on experience & practice with equipment, surveying, and cone cut tests, plus a printed copy of the 'California Cone Hunter's Pocket Guide'
What to bring
Binoculars (if you have them), hard hat, camp chair, closed-toed shoes, all meals and snacks, sun protection, warm layers. Note: If camping, campers are responsible for bringing ALL necessary camping equipment and meals. Potable water will be available.
Cone Camps are organized by American Forests in partnership with CAL FIRE Reforestation Services Program and USDA Forest Service Region 5 via the California Reforestation Pipeline Partnership.
